What size gauntlets? - 10/21/08 06:07 PM
What gloves do you prefer when trapping near water? I plan on doing some pocket sets for coon. Do you suggest full shoulder length gloves or will elbow length be fine? Just want to stay dry and warm during winter.

Go with the gauntlets. Have always splashed above, or often wished for a little more than elbow length allows.
Kinda like hip boots vs waders~ I'd rather go with to much material etc. and deal with cost/inconvenience than be miserable for a good part of the day.

I like gauntlets for cold weather but prefer the shorter gloves for summer and shallow sets. I also prefer hip boots to waders. Don't go deeper than they allow & don't get stuck in the mud!

I usually don't wear rubber gloves when coon trapping. It's just a personal preference. If my hands are cold after making a set, I don a pair of jersys. I do have shoulder lengths on hand, but only wear them when deeper water dictates, or it's blistering cold a few weeks into season.
Now, if I'm in a marsh, targeting muskrats, the shoulder lengths never come off.
