I tried them once 26 years ago and won't go back again. I have used copper ever since.

I am using them now because i did not have time to order copper, and I am coing to go to copper next year. I have found that allot of them come up missing. they are hard to read and tear easy.

The closest I ever came to receiving a citation for my trapping activities was a trap tag violation, when I was using the "write-your-own style tags to save a little money. What saved me was that there was no "intent" on my part to avoid IDing my traps.
I immediately went to "store-bought" tags, as fast as I could order and receive them. I have had no problem with tags since that time. My personal preference is either brass tags, or to stamp or engrave my traps with my Lifetime, Permanent Trapper's ID Number which we are allowed to use to the exclusion of any other identifying information.

I think they're just about worthless. IMO if you need some quick tags...what the heck they're cheap and will get you going, but as far as durability...NO WAY

I'm with the rest of the replies on the write ons...especially 45/70.
The solution I came onto was using aluminum flashing and a stamp set. You can cut the material easily and the stamp set makes short order of imprinting the numbers. Now then, in NM we have the option of obtaining a trap number from the state or using our name and address...the number makes for short stamping sessions. Also, the material is stiff enough to hold its shape, even after multiple uses (I only use them on snares). I simply roll the tag around the points of parallel needle nose pliers.

Anywhere there is a flourishing hog business hog rings are common. Man they ought to be ankle deep in N.C. They come in three sizes. Yep, small, medium, and large. I also use them to put together my cage traps, until I get them welded.
The suggestion about attaching trap tags to snares is a good one. I do this myself. With double coils, I use a small pair of piano tuners needle nose pliers, and roll my tags on the coil spring ends where they rest on the cross frame.
Some trap thieves, especially antis, don't recognize them as trap ID tags. They think they are a part of the trap. Even some thieving trappers over look them. I have twice recovered stolen DC traps at flea markets because of the way I attach my tags. Oh yes, I use two. One on each of the spring ends.
One of the advantages of rolling tags is that you can tell if someone has looked at your traps. They can never be re-rolled to the same way they looked.
It doesn't hurt to crimp a hog ring around a rolled tag. Sure will keep a coon or coyote from eating it.

Me and a friend of mine used "write your own" tags this year. NEVER AGAIN!!! Every time he or I made a catch the tag would get tore up. Going to copper stamped tags next year.

I rolled mine up in the chain and put some electrical tape around them, and they work fine. If you're not gonna be moving anytime soon, the stamped tags would be better, but for something quick and cheap that will probably have to be replaced next year anyway, the write-yer-own work pretty good.

Run a search for Funke's Trap Tags. He punches his own so you will get your tags within a week. Low prices and quick service. You can also order directly from his website. If your state offers it, get a trapper registration number. Then if you move you just change your address with your wildlife agency. IMHO, the write-your-own tags suck.
