I've been trying to fine tune things here and a few times 45/70 has shown his formula as to a pretty good guess at what a beaver will stretch based on the length of the pelt hanging loose on a nail. = (length + 1/2 length) x 1.1 = what a beaver will stretch to.
I've got some graduations marked down from a nail on my wall, marked to the loose hanging length in relations to the grading sizes, which in turn coincide with the ovals on the pattern. works pretty decent for me so far, so i thought i'd share and maybe save some time. it doesn't happen all the time and maybe i'm the only one, but to get started tacking out a beaver and then find out he needed to be just a little bigger or i cant finish out the pattern cause its too tight is a frustrating waste of time.

beaver grades and what i have measured for ovals dimensions are as follows:
42" = 25" x 17"
47" = 27.5" x 19.5"
51" = 29.5" x 21.5"
55" = 31.5" x 23.5"
60" = 34" x 26"
65" = 36.5" x 28.5"
72" = 40" x 32"
80" = 44" x 36"

now, i've got a nail on my wall with graduations marked down based on the formula.

25.5" down = 42" beaver or 1st oval
28.5" down = 47" beaver or 2nd oval
30.9" down = 51"
33.3" down = 55"
36.4" down = 60"
39.4" down = 65"
43.6" down = 72"
48.5" down = 80"

I've got each graduation color coded the same as the oval on the stretcher so i just hang up the beaver and he hangs down there around the 33 1/4" blue mark, i put him on my board to the blue mark which stretches out to 55", and so on.

I just started this to try and the last few it has worked out really good. wouldn't say its been through a 100 beaver to test yet, but its been close enough that i'm gonna keep using it till i find a better way.

Thanks, I've been looking for one of these charts. If nothing else, you've helped me out.

I think that is a good idea. But after you do a few hundred of them, you can almost tell by guessing.

Here's another little tip. You don't exactly have to follow that pattern. These shapes are approximate. If you have started to tack a beaver on one line, then find you have stretched it too large, let the other end on of the pelt fall back to the next smaller line, and taper the sides of the pelt from one pattern into the next. Conversely if you started too loose, pull the pelt on down to the next larger line. The slight difference in the oval shape of one end of the pelt verses the other end will be of little consequence.

Another thing I don't hesitate to do is "half-size" a pelt. I tack out the pelt in the space between two lines instead of trying to get right on a line.
