What do you recomend for trap dip: Gas or Lantern Fuel?

And what precautions do you recomend for using this mixture inside of a barn?

(Edit: Title edited to reflect topic. -- Hal)

Welcome kmp. I have used both but I like the lantern fuel. It dries faster and I, think it dries harder. I also dip mine in the barn but I have no source of flame in there. The precautions on the can are like any other combustible product, Do not use near open flame. The fumes also keep the wife out of my barn.

Lantern fuel (white gas). Had a problem with gasoline (octane? additives?) and an early dip product. Suspect they have worked it out, but I'm happy with the lantern fuel, so that's what I'll stick with.

In the barn: Use the same precautions one would with any flammable volitale: open doors (good ventilation), no open flame, etc..

Regards,

Try lacquer thinner... Its cheaper than white gas and will dry real fast.....

lacquer thinner huh? Never thought of that. Do you mix the same ratio?

The thinner will cause the dip to be brittle and chip off. Follow directions and don't blow yourself up. I use high octane gas with the thinnest mixture recommended and dip each trap several times.

Ric: Do you use your dipped traps on canidae? If so, I might switch from naphta and save a little.

Thanks. smile

No,I wax "land" traps. The only traps I dip are bodygrip's and beaver footholds.
Your correct that naphtha would be a less costly way to go.The main reason I went to lacquer thinner is speed.I can dip the traps and put them away the same day.

We've got at little bit of confusion here.

Above, Jim Blakley calimed that laquer thinner is cheaper than lantern fuel (white gas, naphtha). Is that really the case?

I believe Musher is talking about switching to laquer thinner because he thinks it's cheaper.

Somebody price these things out, please.

Hal

Thanks for the info guys.
If we are going on cost; Gas here was $2.31/ gal for 87 octane (proabably around $2.51 for premium). Why not use gas? How much longer are we talking aboput for drying time and are there any other reasons why coleman fuel over gas?

Here are some current per-gallon prices:
Lacquer Thinner $15.98 (Lowes)
Naphtha $12.48 (Lowes)
Coleman(R) Fuel $8.47 (Walmart)

Often you can find "off" brands of lantern fuel cheaper than Coleman(R) fuel.

Can anybody cite a readily available source for any of these products cheaper than this?

KMP: Gasoline has a lot stronger odor than lantern fuel. Also, gasoline has some strange additives which can delay drying time. And here's a question that just came into mind. Has anybody tried using gas with ethanol added for dipping traps? I'm not at all sure how that would work.

Andy Stoe's Speed Dip says on the label "Do not use gas with ethanol".

Interesting side-note on the prices. Bought some Mineral spirits (paint thinner) this weekend- $8.49/gallon.

I needed it for painting, but have used it with a "no longer available" dip product. Worked pretty well for me. Just another option to keep in mind if it will work with your product.

Thanks a lot, fellows! smile I think I'll stick to Canadian tire lantern fuel!

Gas does hold an odour longer than lantern fuel. It is for that reason why I don't use it.

Mixing the dype with coleman fuel does a better job on the traps for me.Worth the extra money it costs.
