QT2005: I find some traps need tendin, so on a warm sringday I haul them out and check each one over replacing what needs replacin and set in a pile to dye them, dye keeps them alot longer and rust will seize the triggers on the coni's and slow the springs on footholds. Beside it gets me a chance to dream of next season and reminiscene about the past!

Personally, I'd advise you to clean up those traps, repair them where necessary, and get them ready for the next season. Rusting does a trap absolutely no good. I tend to all my traps in the spring. When they are cleaned and repaired, I either wax them or dip them, depending on the trap. They can then be stored for the off season, with no further deterioration of the trap. When trapping season rolls around again, I just grab them, clean the coating off the notches and triggers, and I'm ready to go. smile -- Hal

My actual preference is for wax, because following wax, I can clean a trap right back down to the bare metal with nothing more than hot, boiling water. With that said, I wax all my smaller traps, like #2's and below. I also wax all my canine traps. I use dip on my large footholds for beaver and all my bodygrip traps. I use dip here primarily because I can mix it in a 5-gallon bucket and get the big traps in there (my wax pot is a 2-gallon bucket). To dip the larger bodygrip traps, I pour the dip into a flat plastic tub. I return the dip to the 5-gallon bucket when I'm done and seal it up. smile -- Hal
