I have a sealed bucket of petroleum-based dip that is at least 15 years old. Each season I stir it up, add a little more dip and a little more lantern gas and go again. And that bucket stays in my trap shed year around.

My experience with water based coatings is that they must be protected from freezing during storage. I am assuming that is true for Formula One, but since I've never use it, I'm not sure. Has anyone had a batch of F1 freeze, and has that hurt it? Also I would like to know how long a batch of diluted F1 will last. It's been around for a while now and someone should have some data on this.

Thanks.

Hal

I've kept some in the house for a few years. The lid must be tight.

"The lid must be tight."

That's true for any type of dip. I think we had a discussion on here one time about storing dip. I use a lid with a gasket to seal my petroleum based dip.

I don't want to drag this off track, but do you use both types of dip?

I use way more petroleum based dips. I haven't purchased F-1 in a while.

I like F-1 on snares.

You can not let F1 freeze, Otherwise it works ok for me. I use it on my wolf traps. Like it for the fact that you can dip anytime.
I store the unused in a sealed can and just add each year.

buckshot: F-1 is a water based dip. If I'm not mistaken, it's very similar to what some use to coat fishing nets. (Since you're on the Rock, I'm guessing that you are familiar with such coatings.)

Speed Dip is mixed with petreum distillates. (I use naphta.).

They are 2 very different trap coatings. The speed of drying and their interacting with freezing temperatures are just two of the differences.

Musher: I've never heard of water based net dips. But I do have a friend down south who uses a petroleum based net dip, that is very similar to trap dip. In fact, he dips both his traps and his nets in the same dip.

Granted my area doesn't get nearly as cold as places further north, but my F1 stays in a plastic tote with a lid on it in my shed year round. I add a little more dip and water every year. I have to mix it up every time I use it cuz some of the dies separate, but I stir it up and its good to go.
