I need to come up with a new way to set 330s or I'll have to stop using them altogether. My hands don't have the strength any more to use the tongs. Had a beaver job last week and it just about killed me getting the 330 springs compressed.

Any suggestions? thx

With longer tongs you should get the leverage required to open the traps.

A more important question you might ask yourself is how will you get out of the trap if things go wrong.

Yes, safety is concern. That's why I need another way to set them or free myself.

Does someone make tongs longer than 30" (what I have)?

I'm having shoulder surgery next week so in case I don't have the strengh to set mine I am going to weld 2" by 4" pice of metal to the ends of my setter. That way I can sit it on the ground and press down with my foot to set with one hand if needed.

Have you tried the gem setter. It looks like a bicycle pump. Saw someone demo one at local sporting goods store. looked pretty easy. F&T carry's them

KathyP, search the archives. See 3-13-2008 for setting 330s with a rope. A great pictorial by Hal. It's the only method I use. It's also a method that will get you out if you catch yourself. I keep the setting tongs for turning the foil wrapped baked spuds in the campfire.

Frank.

I looked at archives like FLSH ETR said. Then went out to garage and tried using rope to set , this is faster and easier than using my setters. Also a lot lighter, will leave tongs in truck for now own. Please be careful and good luck

Thanks all!

DEP, you and I have the same plan so it must be a great idea. lol Figured that would be a fairly easy way to make the setters easier on my hands. Right now, I kneel on them to close the springs and it's not comfortable.

Re: rope, *always* carry one with me and have used it on occasion w/a 220. Maybe I need to use it more often and see if that's easier than I remember. Certainly is light to carry.

I've seen the Gem setter online. Maybe there will be one at the convention here in September to try it in real life.

Has anyone used that C-hook on a chain or the ones made like caulk guns?

You come to the Indiana Convention, and I'll show you the rope trick. Beyond that I suggest one of those setters that works like a caulk gun.

Hal, I'm planning on being there and will look you up. Will you be bringing some of the stabilizers with you? I could use a dozen of each size.
