I read in a book that boiling snares in baking soda takes the shine off of them. Can anyone tell me how much baking soda to use or does it matter.

This is probably going to sound like a smartass reply but I say use enough to take the shine off...say a whole box to maybe 10 gallons of water. To much baking soda won't hurt them, but to little won't get the shine off.

A quarter of a cup per gallon of water is plenty. Boil them about 20 minutes.

You can also run them thru a cycle in the dishwasher to degrease, when boiled in soda water leave them in overnite then over fill your container to wash the oil away, that way you don't pull your clean snares thru the oil that has accumulated on the surface.

The best way that I have found is to use a solution of 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water. Just soak the snares until they turn dull gray, then rinse with water.
