I am about to start a field study on coyotes and foxes. This study will be on the competition of the two species and the size of each animal captured. I would appreciate any ideas that would go with this study and if anyone knows how to aging the two species. I have a few topics I will be working on in the next two trapping seasons, but I want to know if anyone else has any ideas I have not thought of.

There's something in the archives about aging coyotes by thier teeth.

Will you be euthanizing the animals or letting them go? If they're being euthanized you can send the teeth (usually the canines) to Matson's Lab ( http://www.matsonslab.com/ ), in Montana. He'll age them using cementum analysis, which is generally the most accurate and cost efficient method currently available.

This is where all of my otter teeth are going, and also where many of the states send their project teeth. I know for a fact that NC sends their bear teeth there. For large orders like a study normally has, it'll range somewhere around $4/tooth. Hope this helps.

Section a tooth. You can get one out of live critters if you need to. Anything else is (1) guessing, and/or (2) expensive.

Is this an academic study, or just for your personal satisfaction?

This is a research study for my university. I thought that the aging of the two species would help boost my presentation.

Are these live specimens or have they been euthanized?

These will be euthanized to determined what resoures are being consumed by both species. Also, I will sell the pelts because this study will be from my trap line.

If they're being euthanized your best bet is to send in the teeth. With my otters I'm pulling the lower canines (I'm sending in both since sometimes they break). I'll be sending in 300-450 teeth, and it'll average about $4/tooth. They even put the cross-sections on slides for you. Hope this helps.
