You can have more than one guess -- up to three.

2)The beaver is going to cross the road at the top of the silt wash to get to the swamp it created by plugging the culvert that runs under the road.
3) it's going to replug the culvert that runs under the road.

1- north
2- south
3- east

I didn't say west because "Go west, young beaver." sounds odd!

I was originally going to write "to ask the chicken why it crossed the road" but I'm guessing that is wrong, too.

On a serious note, there seems to be only tracks and no drag marks of branches. So I would guess that it is going to cut something down.

Even though its high water den is now dry, it is returning to that high water den due to A: habit of using that site more recently or B: regular den is still too far under water and this is the only place to return to that this critter is comfortable with.

Other than it is going up stream, I don't know enough about beaver to give a good educated guess. My second guess would be your fur shed.

Guess #2

The beaver is going up the bank to visit a castor mound.

There's something going on with the critter's right front paw. I'm thinking that it might be tangled in a snare, and the beaver is just going around in a circle.

Frank.
