I am fortunate enough to draw an otter tag this year. If I am fortunate enough to connect with an otter I plan to have it tanned to hang in my 'man cave'. This will be my first attempt to ambush an otter, and of course I would appreciate the pelt to be the finest example of the species. I believe the otter season here in WI opens the first of Nov. Should I start setting as soon as I can, or would the pelt be more prime, (i.e. better looking) if I wait till later?

Thanks, Frank.

I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference in an early otter and a late one. However, if you wait too long the otter will be singed.

Thanks man. BTW I read your little singe snippet about curling dry then wet otter hair and how the wet one uncurled itself. Ol' Ma Nature's query, no doubt.

Frank.

You misread. The idea is to keep the otter wet while you are working it. Wet hair won't curl as easily. There's no getting rid of singe.

9/13/04="the wet hair took on a curve as did the dry one, BUT IT STRAIGHTENED ITSELF OUT!"

But yes, I will keep a damp pelt if I get the chance to flesh one. smile

I see what you mean now, but where did you find that. I looked in the FH archives.

Yup, fur handling. Go to page 4 of 25. The thread is 'otter primeness and singe'. Go to the second page of that thread. That's where you'll find your statement about straightening out curved wet hair. Dude, that was a long time ago. Some days I don't remember what I had for breakfast!

Stay cool man, Frank.
