I've been reading this morning, about deer antlers and goat salt. Deer and goats are about the same.

I found 2 links that are a little bit interesting.

http://www.elkusa.com/COMPOSITION%20dog_antler_chews.htm

http://championschoicesalt.com/animal/goat/

I read one little story, deer antlers are selling for $10 per pound, for dog chews. Do a search: antler shed hunting. I watched a video the other day, 3 guys were out west someplace looking for sheds. They were finding deer and elk antlers. They had a nice stack of horns at the end of the trip. I'm sure the big, pretty, matching antlers are worth more.

I'll check my camera before long and we'll compare our deer.

Well, I checked my camera yesterday. I had 488 pictures, as well as I can tell the buck on the right is the best one so far. All 3 deer are bucks.

Look at the belly of the deer in the middle, I'd say she's heavy with fawns.

Coming home yesterday a doe ran across the road, hopped the fence and headed out into a pasture. Nothing there for another 250 yards, I suspect she's already dropped her fawn(s), out in that field.

Also got a picture of a scruffy looking coyote.

My goodness, she's almost round. I'd never thought of it this way, but Mother's Day was the 14th.

This past weekend a man told me that he'd found a fox den on his farm, with 7 pups. He said they were a little smaller than a house cat. Several folks have told me about seeing this years bear cubs.

My opinion, these big does, proven breeders are about as important to the deer herd as anything else.

I talked to Donnie, from the DOH the other day, he said they'd picked up 6 buck deer from the roads, the week before. He said the biggest one had horns 6 or 8 inches long.

Saturday morning Moe and I were out varmint calling and jumped 2 deer, I didn't get a good look at the first one, but the second deer had horns up flush with it's ear tips.

Exactly 2 years ago, yesterday, I posted a picture of a fawn on my facebook thing. I'm pretty sure I posted the same picture here on the forum. I watched it bed down and it let me walk up to it and take pictures.

The ground is too wet and soft to drive to my camera now, it takes me an hour to walk down there and back out. I'll check it again before long.

I'd been needing another trail camera(s), I've got it watching Wardney's illegal salt lick. In 7 days, it's taken 77 pictures, all deer.

I ordered a set of lithium batteries, I'm going to keep record of how many pictures I get before they die. $14 for 8 AA's.

Above we were talking about fawns, about 3 weeks ago, the mailman started telling me about seeing a few here and there. He drives a lot of miles every week.

Farmers around here are just now starting to make hay, we'd had some wet weather, but they're hitting it hard now. Farmers don't like to talk about stuff like this, and I'd never ask if I didn't know them real well. But there are quite a few fawns that get caught up in hay machines.

These guys make hay in the same fields, with the same acreage, year after year, so they pretty well know what to expect. As of my last report, they're not seeing as many fawns as last year.

I've got 2 new cameras sitting here beside me, I'm not sure where to put them? Think I'll take them up on the mountain and see if I can't get some bobcat pictures. I just hope they don't end up in a bear turd. Reckon I'd better take that milk crate, so I can get them up out of reach.

I'm sure these are the same 3 deer that are in the picture above dated 6/6/17. Wardney's illegal salt lick. I took the tractor and mowed the grass around the salt lick yesterday.

Camera #3 is on the job now, it's on top of the mountain east of town. It's about 2 miles behind a locked gate, watching a rock in the middle of the road, that bobcats like to crap on.

I'm not going to get many deer pictures with that camera, but while I was up there I did see a buck deer. I'd say it's antlers were about the same as the picture J. posted above.

There are lots of green huckleberries up there, not sure, they might be ripe in a month or so? Hard to say what all kinds of critters we'll get with this camera.

This is the best buck so far.

Seems like the deer have changed their pattern. The camera had been up for 16 days, I think, and only 44 pictures.

Camera #4 is on the job, I've got it watching one of my favorite bobcat crossings, it's about half-way up the side of the mountain south of town. That camera will get us some interesting pictures. And it just might end up in a bear turd too.

The road is kind of tight out through that area, I mounted it standing on the side of my truck bed, it's about 10 feet off of the ground. Had to cut some brush out of the way too.

I set a little white rock on the side of the road, and added a dab of lure. The rock is about a foot square, it'll be on the left of the picture. Very good chance we'll get something sniffing that rock tonight. We'll see in a week or 2.

Notice that fine mowing job above.

I'd say that these are the same 3 buck deer as above, at Wardney's illegal salt lick. It's kind of hard to see, but notice the second deer on the left, you can see it's butt and it's head, it has little nubs. In one of the other threads we talked about button bucks being shot for females. He's a prime example. My opinion, he's not going to grow much antler this season.

If these are the same 3 bucks in my other pictures (more than likely they are), the buck on the left, in front, has broken off it's left horn, or smashed it or something?

In a weeks time I got 88 pictures from this camera.

I looking forward to checking cameras 3 and 4, but I'm going to wait a while longer. It's almost like being at 4 different spots at the same time!

Wardney and I rode up and checked camera #3 yesterday. Notice the brush across the road, that's pretty much what the woods look like in that area, laurel, huckleberries, oaks, pines and a good many gum trees.

This camera is set at about a 45* angle watching the road. I got bear pics on the 26th, 28th and 29th. Also got a picture of a fox or a coyote pup? It was walking away from the camera, I'm not sure. Lots of 4-wheeler action, one bunch was up there screwing around after 10 pm.

Think I'll move this camera next check, there's a little spring seep, about a mile south. We're dry as a bone now, that should be a good spot.

Ok, these pictures above are from camera #4, first time I've checked it. That's my dog in the one picture, she weighs 65# give or take. Notice the rock she's sniffing, that's where I've got my lure. There's no bait or anything, that's just the old road out around the side of the mountain.

I did get a picture of a groundhog and a couple of fawn deer. No bobcats yet. Good news, the only vehicle in the pictures is mine.

I looked back through my pictures, the batteries in camera #1 are dead. It's last picture was a week ago. That camera has been out since April, 2016. I replaced the batteries in November, 2016. Fifteen months on 2 sets of batteries, and I'll guess somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 pictures, that's not bad.

Camera #2 is averaging more than 20 pictures per day.

I've never heard anything about trail cam maintenance, I'm going to bring that camera home and give it a good cleaning. Thinking about tree pollen, water dripping off of the timber, etc. Seems like it's pictures aren't as crisp as they were a year ago.

Well, I see where all of my pictures are gone. The way I read things, I can get them back if I pay Photobucket $400 per year. That's not going to happen.

I did clean my original camera the other day, it was dirty, I used up 6 Qtips on the thing. I used warm water only.

I've got 3 cameras out now. I did check the camera at Wardney's illegal salt lick yesterday. I've got a picture of a bald eagle perched on the stump, and a picture of 2 coons. Nothing special antler wise.

I'll tinker around and figure out this new way of posting pictures and get back to posting.

Your photos are not hostage. You can download them back on to your computer. From now on, just upload them to the BB. See the little icon with the blue arrow? (at the top of the text entry box). Upload them straight here and they won't get lost. -- Hal

I still have all of my pictures on the computer, well, they're on a "memory stick" now.

The local "computer whiz" told me a year ago that my machine was about ready to crash. I asked her to try to post a picture direct, and she couldn't get it to go.

She ordered a new "brain thing" for the computer, just got it set up yesterday. I'll try to post a pic later.

I noticed that Brian lost his profile picture too. I wonder if we've lost any of the picture threads in the archives? I figure some of the early threads were made with Photobucket.

I sent Photobucket an email the other day, got a reply from "Robert", their computer. I replied to that message, maybe a real person will answer my questions?

More or less a note to myself, Moe and I checked location #1 (camera #3) 140 pics and camera #4 today, 41 pics.

Bear pics at both cameras, 2 bobcat pics, coons, nothing special antler wise. Several fawns.

The bobcat was on camera #4, was near my lure rock at least 4 minutes. I'd guess it at a good 16, 18 or 20#. Daytime pictures, about 7 am.

The deer and coons are sniffing that rock too.

Soon as I figure out the new computer I'll let you guys take a look.

Just so happened, someone ran over a skunk just up the road last night, it's located at camera #4 now. We'll get some action there soon.

Maybe some but not too many. I was astute enough to predict some of these problems. As you know, I spent a lot of grief trying to make our archives. Whenever a thread seemed to be good enough to archive, I moved a copy of any pictures it contained, to a directory right here on this website. No matter what happens to the photo hosting sight -- we are covered.

Finally got a reply from Photobucket, let me stay on these folks for another week or 2, before we delete our threads.

You know, it's fine if they change their 3rd party posting rules, but it would be nice if pictures posted before the change would still be available.

As Hal mentioned above, there has been a lot of time invested. Even if we are only bs'n about deer horns, it was nice to compare this year's growth with last years. Plus the other threads.

J. That is going to be a nice buck. I have one almost as big, seems like the bear are messing up our deer's pattern.

I'm going to start another thread about picture posting, if you get a chance I'd like you to explain how this operation works.

I've tried to post pictures, every time it says: The file is too big. I not sure how I can reduce the resolution of my pictures. Our cameras are about the same. It's got me stumped.

This picture in its original format was to big. It said it had to be in PNG or JPG format. I have some video software and used it to convert to PNG. It reduced the file but still to big. So I converted to JPEG at 85%.

Here's a picture that I took with my hand-held camera last Thursday. 7/27/17. I was road hunting my dog, just letting her get some exercise, that deer locked onto the dog and didn't flinch. That deer is only off 25 yards. This is on the mountain east of town, one of the hunting clubs. Remember the little spring that I mentioned before?, it would be off to the right of the picture, less than a half mile away.

I had intentions of setting-up my other camera at the spring. Moe was riding with me, first time he'd been on the mountain for a long time. He couldn't get his bearings with the leaves on the timber, ended up giving him a tour of the place. Then didn't have time to put out the camera.

It seems like the buck deer I had on this camera, back in January and February are missing now. More than likely because of the bear activity. Moe's camera isn't far from this camera, he's getting bear pictures too.

Farmers are telling me that the bear are doing a lot of damage in the corn fields now.

A month or 2 before Photobucket gave us the shaft, I looked at the 2016 antler thread, I'm glad I did. Should have written down the dates, when our bucks had pretty much reached their peak. As well as I remember, our best pictures while they still had their velvet, should be coming up around Sept. 1st to the 15th.

This little buck above, I'd say he's about finished growing. I've got pictures of 2 or 3 or 4 little bucks at each of my 3 cameras. Maybe the bear will move out and the bigger deer will move back in?

I did see a hen turkey the other day, with 8 or so little ones.

Tim: Your photos are still available. Photobucket has not deleted or destroyed anyone's digital images. You can have them back any time you want. You just need to download them from photobucket on to your computer. They just don't want to host people's photos for free anymore and I seriously doubt you will be effective in getting them to change their policy.

This started when folks didn't have enough storage space on their computers. Now computers will hold all your photos and then some. I've heard folks declaring photobucket is holding their pictures hostage. They are not. Again anyone who wants the photos they have stored on photobucket can get them back.

With that said, there is still going to be a great fiasco. The address (http://photobucket/yadayada/etc) on the placeholders for these photos is no longer valid. Folks who do get their photos back will have to find a new web presence (host) to support them, then replace (readdress) their photos. Or, here they can use the photo upload feature to store the photos on site. But it will still require attention for each and every photo the needs replaced.

I have some sympathy for this. I moved to the upgraded BB system, and moved to a new host, I had to readdress all the photos in our archives. But the photos were still there.

I still have all of my pictures, either on the old computer or the memory stick thing. I'll have them transferred to a disc.

Bad thing is, when I posted my pics using Photobucket, I picked out the best of the best. And there are thousands and thousands of pictures on my computer. It would be a real chore to find them again.

I agree that it's pretty much a lost cause to expect Photobucket to repost our pictures, but it was worth a shot. Other than my time, it didn't cost me anything. No harm done.

I just installed Google earth, was looking at my camera locations. They are pretty much in a line. This picture below is from camera #1, it's 5.9 miles from this camera to Wardney's illegal salt lick. The camera in the middle is 2.5 miles from camera #1, and 3.6 miles from Wardney's salt lick.

So it should be pretty safe to say that about all of my deer pictures are different animals. Never know about the bear?

When I had the camera on the mountain east of town, it was 4.2 miles from camera #1. And I'll guess around 5 miles from the other 2 cameras. I'll put that camera back, think I'll run it on a monthly check.

Here's a picture from Wardney's Illegal salt lick, from today. I was watching them, I'd guess they are all last spring's fawns. So, they'll be 18 months old in November.

Seems like the little 6 point that I had before, came up missing. Maybe the "Outlaw factor"?

Looks like a new salt block on the stump too.

The picture above from the Moultrie camera is a deer that Moe got on his camera. He's going to be a nice buck. He's toast!

My picture with the yellow arrows, there is a squirrel behind the "salt lick" tree, and another little buck, with the arrow pointed toward it's head.

(It's hard to draw with a mouse)

Notice the little buck on the left, his horns are a little bit unique. The way they are now, it's like 2 fingers wide, sort of like a scoop. I'd guess both of these deer were born summer of 2016.

I'm still having trouble posting pictures, sometimes it'll go on the first try. The one above finally went on the 4th or 5th try? I'm going to try another one in a minute.

I checked 2 of my cameras yesterday, they'd been out for 20 nights, I had a total of 624 pictures. 434 at the lower salt lick. No fox, bobcat or coyote pictures this check.

One of my facebook friends posted a video of 3 buck deer in her backyard yesterday, (she lives about 5 miles down the road), the biggest one is starting to shed it's velvet.

I'd say that one buck above is the same deer that Moe got on his camera, a week or 2 ago.

Notice the blue circles, I put another "lure rock" on the left side of the road, behind the dog. That lure is 20 days old, she's still sniffing it. Also put a bigger rock on the right side of the road, it's got bait under it. Not sure?, the rock on the right side weighs 100 pounds or so? I trimmed the pine brush out of the way, but we'll have some action at that rock!

Above, with the man riding his horse, I know him. He's not trespassing. He rode right under my camera, twice, so did his buddy. I've got them coming and going.

This is an odd picture, the fawn has little nubs, and I figure the 2 buck deer on the right will be 18 months old in November. Never know, but it makes me think something happened to the fawn's mother. Crop damage permits? Roadkill?

I checked 2 cameras Sunday morning, 9/10/17. In 13 nights I had 641 pictures at the "lower salt lick", only 40 some pics at the "lured rock" camera. I've noticed some of the fawn deer are starting to lose their spots, and I'm not positive, I think some of the buck deer have lost their velvet. I had a bunch of fuzzy pictures this time, animals running.

But look at the picture of the 2 bear cubs, you'll be able to recognize my 3 lure rocks. 2 on the left side of the road, and the big one on the right. No fox, bobcat or coyotes again this check. I did have coons and lots of bear pics.

Here's one that you won't be seeing on the camera at the "lower salt lick" anymore. That's Moe with his deer, we'll call it 2017-#02. A nice big fat doe.

There was a delicious doe named Flo,
whose get up and go was slow.
She ran left, then right,
and was soon in the sight,
of the valiant hunter named Moe.

Tim: Are you using the "paint" program to draw arrows as I have seen in posts the past?

If so, there is a "rotate" button in that program that will rotate your photos.

Did you "SAVE" the photo after you rotated it?? Don't stop taking vertical photos. There's a solution to this problem somewhere.

The way this machine is set up, I doesn't have a "paint", it has a "draw" area. I've flipped that picture and it keeps coming up, tilted to the left. I'll try it again.

Frank, I emailed the picture to Moe, he posted it on his facebook thingy, his neighbor said that she thinks the doe's name was Sarah. Darned if I know?

Maybe I've got it figured out? Seems like if I draw on the picture it'll go. I just put the arrow pointing to his little radio, that's the way we stay in touch.

Tim, I can't rhyme Sarah with Moe. The only thing I can come up with is dirty, which would not be allowed on this site. You'll have to tell your buddy's neighbor to come up with a diddy of her own. grin

Here's a deer that was killed inside the city limits of Morgantown, WV. That's Jim's boy with the deer, they had some kind of special archery season. Jim said that he'd been watching the deer, and his boy called him from the tree stand after he shot it. It's a 10 point, 20" wide, and it weighed 232 pounds (field dressed) on certified scales. That is one huge deer!

Our deer should be a little bit heavier than normal this season, we have a very good mast crop. Just looking at my train camera pictures, from past experience, I might have 2 or 3 bucks that will go 150+ field dressed. We guessed Moe's doe at 120#.

Frank is right about Sarah, there's not a whole lot of stuff that rhymes. About the only thing that I could come up with was: Ole Sarah, she'd dodged a lot of arrow. The guys over on the next property west, they've been slinging arrows for about a month now.

I checked 3 cameras yesterday, they'd only been out 10 nights, had a total of 186 pictures. The other day we were talking about deer using salt licks this time of year. The camera at the "lower salt lick", took 129 pictures, so averaging 12 pics per day.

Seems like I'm getting a lot more nighttime pictures. Three of the biggest bucks that I was getting pictures of on the "lower saltlick" camera, they've came up missing, for the last 6 weeks. There are lots of acorns laying around, and now that the leaves are coming off, I noticed that we've got a good crop of wild grapes too.

You'll notice the pictures from the "lured rock" camera are a little different. One of the landowners worked the road the other day with his 10=ton dozer, and pushed all 3 of my rocks over the hill. No big deal, there's no shortage of rocks on that mountain!

I'm not sure what order these pictures will show up? The one picture should have an X, there are 2 deer ribcages under that little tree top. Hopefully we'll get some pictures of furbearers.

Notice the first deer above, it's really small. It's not this years fawn, maybe he was a late fawn last year?

The second deer, not sure if he'd be 18 months old? Or if he'd be 2.5 years old?

I've been saving bottom jaw bones from deer, I'd like to get proficient at ageing them at a glance of their teeth.

You're not trying to post more than 4 or 5 pictures per post are you?

I was thinking the limit was 5, even those little smiley things count as a picture too.

Well, put it on us.

I can give you more fodder, kick it around a day or 2 and come up with a set of song lyrics worth a Million dollars.

Nope, ain't lettin' me reply with my poem. A 403 forbidden error occurred. That's what the message says. Let's see if this goes through. If it does, then I guess I'm really confused.

I'm not sure? Are you positive that you were "logged in" when you tried to post the poem?

This computer goes to sleep, shuts down and restarts itself from time to time. Sometimes I'll still be logged in, sometimes I won't. It won't let you comment if you're not logged in, it shows some kind of: error or you don't have permission.

Try it again.

Yup'r, am logged in during the try. Funny how it lets me post this kind of reply, but not the lame poem I tried to post. I'll try to sneak it in here, just to see what happens.

Nope, it didn't let me. Went back and erased it. Could be this putr was make in China, by the company 'Sum Ting Wong'.

Well, I checked the 3 mountain cameras today. Finally got a possum picture! No fox, only 1 bobcat picture in the last 8 weeks, from my "lured rock" camera. Lots of bear pictures, and I did see a small bear today while checking the cameras.

Our bear season opens Monday, 11/20/17, with the opening of WV's firearm deer season.

(Frank, I got your poem. I'll see if it goes for me.)

Yep, looks like the old 403 error. Maybe for the best. lol

Yup, probably for the best. I can stitch an entire house together but can even create a complete sentence worth reading. Going up to camp early tomorrow for our gun hunt. Hope my aim isn't as bad as my poetry. grin

Frank the crank, whose poem did stank. frown

Home again, home again, jiggity-jig.
Jason shot a spiker that was kinda big.
Then a young doe sledded into camp by Paul.
And me, I came home with nothing at all.

The buck above, it's a 14 point, both brow tines are forked, I posted pictures of him above. It hasn't been on my camera since the first of November. A man killed him the first day of season, 11/20/17, around 3/4's of a mile from the "lower salt lick" camera. Pretty sure he's the same buck I spotted standing out in the edge of the thicket last Saturday, didn't have any trouble seeing his antlers from 200 plus yards.

My buddy Moe took a shot at one yesterday. It's an 8 point, 23 1/4" wide at the widest point.

It won't let me post a picture of Moe's deer, I'll try later.

Here are 2 bucks that I've blasted with my regular camera. The one is a 6-point, and a spike, and I've bumped into turkeys 2 or 3 times.

We've been warm and our woods are dry as a bone, critters are sitting tight.

Anyone else catching pictures?

Here's a picture that I took with my regular camera today. I had my dog with me, but all together we got to see 10 deer, today. Bear season is in also. Tomorrow is the last day of season.

The WV DNR will send out a final report on the overall deer kill, probably one day next week? Before the DNR sends out their report, I'll give you a run down on my season. And the reports that I've had from my friends and hunting buds. And we'll see how my opinion compares to the DNR's.

I've had a good season, even though I haven't really fired a shot. Days kind of run together after a while, but I do remember the first day. Not counting the buck deer standing off in a pasture field, I scoped over 3 antlered bucks before 9 am, the first morning. A spike, a 4-point, and really couldn't tell about the first deer. It was bigger, all 3 were chasing a doe, not positive, but I'd say it was the same doe?

The one 6-pt that I posted a picture of it above, (with my regular camera) pretty sure I scoped it over 3 separate days. Pretty much in the same area. That one little spike, his horns are kind of odd, positive that I had him in the crosshairs at least twice. Turkeys, bumped into a bunch of 7 long-beards, 2 different days. And kicked out the same bunch of hens and little ones, 3 times in one day. I've been wearing blaze orange too. And a couple of singles here and there. I've had fun!

There was about an inch of fresh snow on the mountain this morning, I broke track, give or take about 8 miles. It snowed up till around 4 am, this morning, but I did track a bobcat and a red fox.

I'm going to guess, that WV's overall deer kill is going to be down, quite a bit. At least in this area. I live in Hardy County, according to the DNR, we came in with the 9th highest buck kill in the state. There are 55 counties in WV.

Tomorrow is the last day, we've got a light snow going on now. Reckon I'll run up and track out the mountain again in the morning. Honestly, I'll be surprised if I don't find a bear track. Never know.

If you find a fresh bear track, can't you walk it down? They must not go very far at this time of year.

I'd like to cut the track of the biggest bear on my trail camera today. I've tracked out and killed a couple bear that way, it's hard to track and still keep your head up and hunt. Seems like they always bed in a thick spot, where you can only see 15 steps or so. About 3 hops and it's gone, hear the brush breaking and rocks rolling and all. Sometimes you can get out where you can pick it off on the next ridge.

If I find a nice track this morning, I'll let you know what happens. Ideal conditions, we got just enough snow to cover up the old tracks, and it's 11* now. Probably 5 on the mtn.

I'll show you a couple pictures from yesterday.

That's my "lured rock", notice the little yellow spot, that's genuine frozen coyote pee.

Here's the only bear track that I found yesterday. Compare it to the heel of my boot, maybe a male cub?

Follow along the blue line, it went down over the side of the mountain, heading south.

Here you can get a glimpse of where I'm hunting. (If I have them in the right order.)

We're down to 0* this morning, coldest day we've had this winter. I did see 7 deer yesterday, all does.

The little bear that I tracked yesterday, was border-line legal. I didn't find it's track till about 10 am, still had another 2 miles of road to track, and I had to be at work at 2pm. If I'd tracked the 300 pounder, I'd probably been late for work!

If you'd have 2 or 3 or 4 guys hunting together, staying in contact and all on the same page, I could have kicked out that bear in an hour or two. Somebody would have seen it.

Moe said it's too cold, Wardney is under the weather, Big D. don't hunt Sundays, and on and on. It's hard to find anyone that wants to hunt anymore!

My buddy Moe and I rode out this evening to check the river ice, then headed up on the mountain, just looking for tracks.

We had another little dab of snow last night, and found 2 sets of bear tracks. These are 2 different bear, both headed west, and both of them had a nice sized foot. Didn't track any fox, coyotes or bobcats. Did track a mink on the river. Very few deer tracks, did see 2 fawns.

I'll add one more comment before the DNR sends out their final deer headcount.

I talk to a good many people while I'm at work, nearly everyone that I've talked to is a little bit disappointed in our past deer season. Just the number of deer that they were seeing.

Talked to a man the other day, he said that he'd hunted 5 days, and didn't even see a tail. That's bad. A friend of mine, he and his family own 1,000 acres east of town, he said this is the worst year that they've ever had. I know that they did pass up some small bucks, but they just didn't see many deer.

The Department of Highways guys, they're not picking up many roadkills. (I'd been wanting a truckload for bait.)

I checked the camera at the "lower saltlick" a week or so ago. Forget how long that it'd been out, 4 weeks or so?, but I had 280 pictures. I've got 3 small bucks on the camera, and as well as I can tell, it's the same 6 or 8 or 10 does and fawns. Pretty much everyday.

The camera up at Wardney's salt lick is about the same. It seems like the same 5, 6 or 8 does and fawns, day after day. I did have that one little 8 point on the camera, last check.

I don't remember, I scoped over 9 or 10 different bucks, but I can tell you that our overall deer population is down. But it'll be interesting to see what kind of "spin" the DNR puts on the numbers.

It's always enjoyable to read, it'll involve the mast crop, road conditions, stream flow, the south wind, etc.

It's a Canon Power Shot, GLPH 360HS. I've only had it 3 months or so? About $250, as well as I remember, free shipping and it came with an extra battery, chargers, and some other stuff. It's small, I carry it in my shirt pocket. Just checked, it'll zoom in 48X. The picture you posted above, I took 8 or 10 pictures of that deer, it was just walking across the ridge.

It's a nice little camera. I'm pretty sure that it even came with an owners manual.

Yeah, I was just wondering. It takes pretty good pictures and I figured you were either getting really close or had a really good camera or both. For a pocket sized deal, those are some really good shots.

Everyone should have a good camera. My first digital camera was about $350, I abused it hard for better than 10 years. Last time I dropped it, the screen shattered, that's when I got the new one. But I do carry it with me, pretty much every time I'm out.

I take a lot of pictures, I've posted some of the pictures above on my facebook thing. Some of my facebook friends are up in years, can't really get out and mess around like they'd like. It only takes a second to snap a picture.

My problem isn't taking the photo. It's sharing the darn thing. Boy, that is a complicated pain.

I have a camera that uses "simple viewer" but it is no longer simple. It uses a disc, which is now so stuck in my wife's old portable that the guy at the store can't even get out.
So it used to be tranfer photos on old portable, send them to photo bucket and then share. Not anymore.

Too bad because I like to think I took photos of interesting stuff.

A smart phone takes great photos. But I don't get cell service at the house and I certainly don't get it on the traplines.

I've looked at new cameras but there are other toys I want more!

This little camera above uses an SD card, the same as the trail cameras. That's how I transfer pictures from the trail cams to the computer, just put the SD card in the handheld camera, plug it into the computer and turn the camera on. I've never timed it before, but it only takes a minute, and I always delete the old pictures from the SD card. So, it's empty and ready to go for the next time I check my trail cams.

When I first started looking for a new camera, I searched "Top 10 best cameras", basically the same thing that I did when I decided on my trail camera. There are a lot of good cameras out there, my first camera was a Canon 35mm, that was 40 years ago, I've just stuck with Canon.

I can't explain how much abuse my last camera endured, I figure if it can hangout with me for better than 10 years, that was $350 well spent.

Remember above (or in the other thread) we were talking about deer keeping their antlers, longer during mild winters? The horns should be popping off right and left this winter. It's minus 4* F, on Mount Storm this morning. I've got 11 here in town now.

It's 0 here right now, Redsnow, but the felt temperature is -18. I spent 3 years up in Mt. Storm working on Corridor H. We did all of the hydroseeding on the 8 mile section from the connector at the bottom of Scherr Mountain on to the third bridge after that. The section that came after the one Mashuda's was doing when Ralph died. It is brutal up there this time of the year.

If I was ever to do any bear hunting in this state, I think that's where I would go. We saw a boatload of bear while we were doing that road. They were really hard on the right-of-way fences.

That is a whole different world up there weather wise, and it'll change quick too. I've got 6* now.

If you look at the one "scene" picture I posted above, the last mountain over, that's Dolly Sods. Spruce Knob would be off to the left of that picture.

Spruce Knob. Spruce Knob, at 4,863 feet (1,482 m), is the highest point in the state of West Virginia and the summit of Spruce Mountain, the highest peak in the Allegheny Mountains.

We do have a lot of bear. I live in Hardy Co, but Grant, Pendleton, Tucker and Randolph Counties are always up near the top of the list.

A friend and I were out Thursday 1/4/18, south east of town, up on the Virginia line, we tracked 2 big bear. Both headed west.

I checked the camera at Wardney's salt lick yesterday, it had over 200 pictures, nearly all of them nighttime. No antlers this time.

Remember above we were talking about deer not using salt licks, during winter? There isn't any other attraction at this camera.

Tim, we put out salt and minerals all year round also. I have several stumps around our farm that we use minerals on. I find from my trail cameras that during winter, it doesn't seem like the bucks use the licks much, but I consistently see does at our licks in the winter. I believe this is because the salt helps them lactate so after they are bred, they will need more salt to promote better lactation. The bucks seem to start showing up at them in the spring.

That is a regular ole bachelorette party at the stump. A lot of horns have dropped in this cold. I shot a deer on the last day of our season. Looked at quite a few yearlings before I finally found a mature deer to shoot. Walked up, and it's a darn buck that has dropped its horns already, and they had been off a while because the spots were pretty well healed up. I tried not to shoot a yearling because I didn't want to shoot a button buck on accident, and I end up still shooting a buck after all of that. I was a little bummed out to say the least, but it's meat in the freezer I guess, and hopefully I will catch a couple yotes off the ribcage.

Back during our buck season, I scoped over 2 (bigger than average sized) deer, and both of them had both sides of their antlers snapped off, about as long as your thumb. I guess from fighting?

I haven't checked 2 of my trail cameras lately, I figure they are due for batteries. Last spring, I still had deer sporting antlers up until March or after. I'd posted those pictures above, then the fine folks of Photobucket gave us the shaft! Anyway.

I did get the DNR's email today, listing the WV deer kill. I think last season we were down, around 25%. Here's their report:

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Preliminary counts indicate hunters harvested 108,160 white-tailed deer in West Virginia during the 2017 seasons. The 2017 harvest was 4 percent below the 2016 harvest of 112,384 deer, and 15 percent below the five-year average of 127,803.

A breakdown of the combined 2017 deer seasons reveals 44,127 bucks were harvested during the traditional buck firearm season, 33,584 antlerless deer were killed during all antlerless firearm seasons, 26,206 deer were harvested by bows and crossbows, and 4,243 deer were taken by muzzleloader hunters.

Antlerless Deer Season
The 2017 antlerless deer harvest, which includes those taken during the youth/Class Q/Class XS deer season, was 3.5 percent less than in 2016 and 22 percent below the five-year average of 43,145.

“It is important to note that the antlerless harvest is the key component to any deer management strategy, as it controls the future deer population,” said Paul Johansen, chief of the Wildlife Resources Section.

The top 10 counties were: Preston (1,703), Upshur (1,300), Ritchie (1,290), Lewis (1,258), Jackson (1,122), Roane (1,101), Wood (1,087), Braxton (1,083), Mason (1,052), and Harrison (1,014).

Hunters are reminded that the DNR will hold 12 public meetings across the state March 12 and 13 to gather comments on fall 2018 antlerless deer hunting seasons in each of the 51 counties where firearms deer hunting is permitted.

Muzzleloader Deer Season
The 2017 muzzleloader harvest of 4,243 was 15 percent below the 2016 harvest of 4,997, and 26 percent below the five-year average of 5,768. The top 10 counties were: Preston (203), Randolph (194), Upshur (163), Nicholas (162), Lewis (146), Jackson (138), Greenbrier (130), Braxton (127), Harrison (126), and Fayette (124).

Archery and Crossbow Deer Season
The bow and crossbow harvest of 26,206 deer was 1.2 percent less than the 2016 harvest of 26,524, and 4 percent below the five-year average of 27,420. Archery harvests are affected by hard mast crops. The average acorn crop in 2016, followed by a better-than-average acorn crop in 2017, likely contributed to the slightly lower 2017 harvest.

More deer were harvested with a crossbow than in past years. For the first time, more deer were taken with a crossbow than a bow. The top 10 counties were: Preston (1,469), Kanawha (894), Randolph (883), Wyoming (824), Raleigh (789), Fayette (765), Wood (738), Greenbrier (722), Upshur (694), and Monongalia (694).

Here's the WV DNR's bear kill report, just got it yesterday.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hunters in West Virginia harvested 3,160 black bears during the combined 2017 archery and firearms seasons, which is the second highest recorded bear kill in state history.

Due to more abundant mast production in 2017, the Division of Natural Resources expected a decrease in the archery harvest and an increase in the December firearms harvest compared to 2016. While both predictions held true, the harvest count for the 2017 seasons increased 5 percent over the 3,012 bears killed in 2016. This is the third straight year the black bear harvest has topped 3,000.

“Historically, an abundance of mast makes bears harder for archers to target, yet leads to a large December firearms harvest,” said Colin Carpenter, DNR’s Black Bear Project leader. “Mast abundance delays denning and keeps bears available to hunters for both the buck-gun and December firearms seasons.”

Hunters killed 612 bears during the first segment of the 2017 archery season (Sept. 30 – Nov. 19). Hunters harvested 327 bears with vertical bows and 285 with crossbows. The top five counties for archery harvest were Nicholas (53), Randolph (45), Fayette (43), Mercer (38) and Preston (38).

Firearms hunters harvested 2,548 bears in 2017. Hunters took 623 bears in September and October, 678 during the concurrent buck-gun bear season, and 1,247 during the traditional December season. The top five counties for firearms harvest were Randolph (224), Webster (210), Pocahontas (204), Pendleton (193) and Nicholas (187).

“The addition of early bear seasons and the buck-gun season over the past 10 years has helped decrease the influence of mast crops on total harvest," Carpenter said.
