I been making S-hooks with my bob custer bender. the s hooks are made from 20 penny nails, is there any need to weld the S-hooks closed. This is for drowning beavers, not concerned about coons etc.

A 20p common nail is made with 6 gauge wire(same size as a lot of J hooks available today). I would see no issue in using a S hook with that diameter wire on any water trap. No welding necessary. Make sure they are closed properly and check them after every catch.

If you plan on opening and closing them repeatedly. Be aware that a S hook can work harden and crack. Often the crack can be seen, sometime not. Common nail stock is fairly malleable. So this is something to just keep in mind. Opening the S hook as little a possible to do what needs to be done will further minimize this

Sorry, but I can't understand why 'S' hooks are even in the mix when quick links are in one's cache.

Frank.
