Has anyone ever used, and had success with, solidified bacon grease at a coyote/fox dirt hole set? This would used in Northern NY, where I have little to no problem with 'possums, skunks or even many 'coons.

The guy that taught me to trap was the government trapper in our area, and one of the best trappers that there ever was in our area. He didn’t use commercial bait, the only thing he ever used was either bacon grease or a piece of bacon. He caught fox and coyote all the time on it. We have a lot of coon though so we catch the heck out of them on it too. I am in WV so I’m not too far from NY.

A LOT of the older folks around here used bacon greese. They caught fox not yotes back then. Lots of possums though. Dad used bacon Greece and muskrat with honey to catch fox.

Absolutely! I’m in Central MI and have used Tracy Truman’s bacon bait recipe for the past 4 years. I keep pretty tight records which give me a ratio of canine catch success per number of sets where a particular bait or lure was used. That bacon bait out performed 2 other milder/less tainted commercial baits for the first 2 years I used it. Needless to say, those 2 commercial baits are no longer used on my canine lines.

A tip I forgot to mention- Scorch the bacon when you fry it, that seems to give the bait a little extra "lift".

I am waiting for the beaver castor to make Tracy Truman's recipe. I was given about 4oz of it last year, caught a bunch of coons in a hurry.

Why don't you share the recipe with the rest of the class. Ha

I've seen the bacon recipes on a number of sites. Guys talk about the fox they caught but nothing really definitive about whether it's an effective bait for coyotes. My experience has always been that I catch more coyotes on natural meat baits than commercial baits with deer meat and deer liver being my best producers.

Rereading my previous reply I can see where I wasn’t definitive enough by only using the term “canine”. All I trap are coyotes, so my reply as to the results of using my bacon bait formula pertains to coyote and fox as incidentals.
