Caught rabbits in dirholes intended for fox. Go figure....Fox gland lure and urine. Why would a rabbit go near that? Who knows. Hal, you got a theory on this?

I'll give it a shot.....The bunny just happened into it. Maybe it just stopped for a little sniff as it does many, many times a day at various places throughout its travels. It just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. One rabbit can cover a heck of a lot of real estate. Anyone who has ever bunny hunted can attest to that. Given the number of rabbits on their upswing years and they are on the upswing of their cycle here in Maine, you crunch the numbers and ya gotta figure that a bunny or two is gonna connect with ya after a while. Thats my theory, anyone else....?

...MM... wink

I have a thought on this. I think that rabbits rely more on their sight than their smell. So unless there is a fox in your set, they have no worries.

As for the rabbits in your cubbies, something might have spooked them in. They might not have been after the meat at all. Just an idea.

Lets stay on the subject here.
This one could really take off......LOL.

Alot of my sets are near rose and really thick cover, cause that's where the canines come to eat. Yes Lots of rabbits.
I think they see the hole and Like Bugs Bunny, Whats up doc?
and accidently get pinched.
I avoid alot of this with heavy pan tension, But once in awhile
I still get one. A white bunny tail in the hole works great !

One time, many years ago, I made up a bunch of wooden cubbies, my idea was to trap coon and mink on dry land. For a lure holder, I wired a piece of corn cob in the back of the wooden box, and saturated it with sun rendered (foul smelling) fish oil.

I whacked so many rabbits with these cubbies I stopped using them.

Fox urine attracts hares. I think it's the salt. I can't put a post set anywhere near cover.

The hares also go into cubbies to avoid predators.Yes, they do eat meat once in a while.

Irony is a hare getting caught in a lynx cubby that has a hare, frozen in a life-like position, for bait.

Hal, I'm going to pass that info along to my neighbor. He's always trying to trap rabbits out of his garden but they avoid his cage traps. LOL
