Well, I checked the trees again. They've been in the ground for a week now, the grafts that took are looking good.

Here's the best looking pear/apple rootstock graft. This is new for me, so far it's looking good.

Here's a picture of the first apple that I grafted, March 13th. Seems like it was slow to get started, but looking ok now. I just trimmed off the lower sprout, and sealed up the wound. I'll go back over all of my grafted trees and do the same thing. I want all of the sap going into the main stem of the tree. With just one sprout it should grow fast. This is the only one that I have here at the house, so I can keep an eye on it. Compared to 2 weeks ago, it's looking good.

The trees have been in the ground 12 days, I counted them again, looks like I'm 42/50 now. Looks like the pear on apple rootstock grafts are 5 for 5. That's neat.

Here's the first apple that I grafted this spring. It's in a pot and I walk past it everyday, I'll let you guys take a look.

Just checked the trees, looks like my percentage is going up, as well as I can tell I'm 46/50. I had them at 44 the other day.


This is a good looking little tree, it's grown 4 inches already.

Here's the first apple that I grafted again. Compare it today to the pictures of it in the kitchen sink, 9 days ago.



That was a vertical picture, it looks better in real life. We got hot today, up in the 90's, it's still wilted. It'll perk up and look good at daylight.

I'll add another picture, counted them today at 45 for 50. The pear grafts are 5/5. I mentioned this above, but if you look at the closest tree in this picture, I'm going to remove the 2 weakest sprouts. I want just one main stem. I'd prefer if they'd be 4 or 5 feet tall before they fork.



Thought about this too, pear wood is softer than apple wood. Side by side, I predict that the pears will outgrow the apples this summer. We'll see.

Hey Tim, are all these plants destine for transplanting, or at least thinning? They look pretty close together for an orchard. And can pears and apples exist in the same orchard? Poor bees won't know what they're sucking on!!

Honestly, I did think about that the other day. If I would happen to kick-the-bucket between now and next spring, Mom's back yard would be a mess! Really, that's the only reason that I took a picture of my blueprint. I figure a year from now, this thread will be easier to find than that piece of cardboard, with my scribbles.

Yes, pears and apples will grow in the same patch.
