Big Donnie and I went fishing the other day, we left town with the boat, our fishing stuff and a dozen nightcrawlers. Regular Canadian nightcrawlers like I sell here at work.

We had intentions of stopping out here along the road, seining up a batch of creek chubs and going fishing. But the creek was dry, just a little trickle of water, here and there. We checked 3 spots where I've seined minnows before, and all of them were dry. We are really dry here, we need rain!

We more or less wanted to check out a new patch of water, neither of us have ever fished it or been on it in a boat. Looking at it on Google Earth, it's just a long lazy hole. Looking at it from the bridge, it looks to be 5, maybe 6 feet deep, for as far as you can see. That's deep enough for big bass.

Since we didn't have any minnows, we stopped at a store over there and Donnie bought a dozen Green Nightcrawlers. I was waiting in the truck, I'd never seen a neon green worm before, neither had Donnie. Donnie told me: Well, I'm gonna give them a try. He paid over six bucks for that dozen of worms.

Long story short, the river where we wanted to scout out was 2 feet, maybe 30" below the normal water level. Not enough water to run my outboard motor. At normal level, I think we could have buzzed upstream, maybe a mile? I just wanted to check it out. We ended up coming back home, fishing in our farm pond. We tried those green worms, we caught several fish each, didn't keep anything. My brother likes to take the kids up there and tinker around.

We had 4 or 5 green worms leftover, I've been showing them to my friends here at work. Nobody had ever seen them before, honestly, I don't see where they are any better than a regular worm. Maybe I'm wrong? Six dollars per dozen, .50 cents each, that's pretty high for a nightcrawler.

I searched the other morning, here's a link:

Back when my brother and I were little, we sold worms, for I forget? Probably a Quarter or 50 cents per dozen. Good money at that time.

The link above isn't working, here's a link to Ebay. At least you can see what they look like.

Not sure if that link will work? Do a search: Green nightcrawlers.

They were popular here about 10 years ago for walleye fishing. They don't seem to be as popular now.

I'd never heard of a green worm before. I showed those worms to at least 25 of my friends, one guy said that he'd heard of them.

Donnie bought them Thursday, they were a bright neon green. Last evening, Sunday, most of the green had rubbed off. They were still greenish, but not much.

A friend stopped by last evening, said he and the family were going fishing, so I gave him the last 4 or 5 or 6 green worms.

Fishermen will buy anything, but I honestly don't see where green worms are better than the original.

I'll be, never heard of that stuff either. I honestly don't see myself coloring minnows, or worms.

I searched and found a short U-tube video, I see you can dye minnows blue also. I know that fish hunt with their eyes, in murky water a green minnow may be an advantage? Maybe not?

I read the comments under the video, looks like $12 for a little bottle of dye. If a man was going to do any serious minnow fishing, you'd need to get another job to pay expenses, and then you wouldn't have any time to fish.

It's just like my buddy Bill, a couple years ago he bought some kind of "trout dope", I forget what he paid for the little spray bottle? The first time he used it, he had a very good day. (a lot of times he'll stop here and show me his fish.) Anyway, he went back and bought another bottle or 2.

He usually fishes with 2 poles, that one day he tried them side by side, one bait with the "dope", the other worm just natural. Long story short, Bill said he was wasting his money buying that stuff.

Out swimming I've found a good many tackle boxes and lots of lures, hooked up in rocks and snags and all. You'd just be surprised at what folks throw at our fish.
