I've trapped muskrats before but always used BG traps, usually under the ice. This year I have access to a canal/creek that has a healthy rat population so I'm trying out some #1 coil springs. The water level can change quickly and with fairly significant swings so I decided to use Hagz brachaets on fiberglass fence posts. The pictures show the set-up. I'm asking for any suggestions to improve or criticisms of the set-up. The water depth is 18-36".

I tried a similar installation for mink. Bait was duck. Caught an otter which pulled out on the bank after it pulled/bent the rerod stake. I did not use any cable but slid the swivel onto the rerod. Given the price of mink and the otter incident, I stopped making the set.

I like the theory behind the installation and think it will work.

That should work.

I assume the weight of the trap and chain as it is will be enough to drown the muskrat. Is there a way to add weight to this set-up without splicing on another length of chain?

A couple of wheel weights clipped to the chain can help.
