I've not skinned or fleshed out a furbearer.
I understand that hides are stretched and dried.
Are the hides then tanned or softened for the fur buyer?
For myself I would like to have tanned furs with the fur on.
Wanted to know the process whether selling hides or keeping for myself. Thanks.

Hides are scraped and dried prior to selling to a fur buyer. The fur buyer then has the hides tanned for garment making.

Should you want to keep the hides for yourself, the easiest thing to do is to freeze the hide. A tanner will then process and tan the hide for your use.

Yes, you can scrape and dry the hides yourself and then bring them to a tanner. But you will not really save any money and the tanner must then re-hydrate the hide prior to tanning.
