Last season I had only a week or less to trap. It had been snowing and raining the wole time I was home and could find no dry dirt. Well, i took a big pot and filled it with dirt and dried it out on the wood stove. I used the dirt i dried to make the sets where I could not find dry. Would that method have any effect on sent? The sets where I was able to find dry dirt had no tracks in the snow around them however three of the sets had tracks where around them. 2 bobcats and 1 fox. the cats walked around the sets and left. the fox dug up my trap.

That shouldn't really make a difference. But for next season, try to get your dirt dry ahead of time. If you can't get dirt together, get a bag of peat moss or potting soil and dry that out.

Thanks, will the color difference matter or is that a myth?

Some animals my shy away because of the color difference, but not many.

If u need dry dirt as an at the moment thing, try looking for overturned tree roots or hollowed out creek banks. they tend to keep dry dirt for us. eek

Look for dry dirt under bridges.

You can get dry dirt under bridges as mentioned but in old abandoned barns is another good spot. The reason I say "abandoned" is if a barn is being used for cattle or livestock it will have a strong manure odor.
