And you know what the truth is... the best way to reduce fur damage is don't snare them in the first place.
Yes, you are correct but wrong in the same statement. IMO

You yourself have already acknowledged that you will not pick up a snare unless its the last choice available. How can you compare a tool you use so infrequently to someone who picks up a snare first ?

That question is a good one to answer ....

I don't snare beaver either because I do not like that snare mark on the leather. Sometimes you are OK with a neck catch or with only one foot through the snare, but a lot of times they get both front feet through.

Some say if it is only a red mark, instead of a white mark, it won't be downgraded, but I am not so sure.

Last fall I caught a 72 inch beaver with a bad snare scar all the way around it. It had to have been in a snare years ago and somehow got out of it.

In regard to Hal's statement about the snares flaring out at the end of the ferrule and tangling in the fur. A quick fix for this is to take a pair of diagonal cutters grind the chamfer off the back of them. This allows the cutter to be flush right against the ferrule. Snap-on makes a pair of cutters that are flush cutting. I know this from working on aircraft engines and trimming the lockwire on bolts. I am by no means an expert on snares, or anything else for that matter.

Buzzard: It would be considerably easier to carry on a debate with you, if your arguments were less nebulous.

Any sort of comparative testing would be welcome.

Furthermore,

disregarding pelt damage to a secondary point in fact.........why would you think more live market coyote snaresmen utilize the riechart lock for their snare lock ? Common sense would prevail here as a more relaxing lock would help keep the coyote alive so they could gain in their venture . I cannot believe a snare lock that created more pelt damage would be a "chosen " lock to keep the animal alive.

nebulous:

1. Cloudy, misty, or hazy.
2. Lacking definite form or limits; vague: nebulous assurances of future cooperation.
3. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a nebula.

Had to go to the dictionary myself! wink

Buzzard, can you post a pic or describe this "Riechart" lock. Don't beleive I have ever seen one.
