I personally prefer apples - been using them since 1952 in areas where bank rats are hard to reach for whatever reason. I like quartered apples on a stick over carrots or potatoes: after they are out a few days, before severe freezing weather at the bank in open water, they start to "spoil," turn brown, get juicy and become more aromatic from my experience. I live in apple growing country - the drops are readily available and free.

Ear corn is the best around here. I've tried about everything (apples, carrots, sweetflag, tators, I even tried pumpkin) and corn has always produced the best results. That big yellow ear really sticks out.

I have always used parsnip with exceptional results in Spring & Fall trapping seasons. It shows up well especially when freshly peeled, It has a strong smell & relatively cheap in price

Slices of Apple work well for me. Here are the two sets I use the most.
Pin apple slice on bank where muskrat have been digging. Place foothold trap below in water and stake out in deeper water.
Place apple slice on 110 trigger and place under ice near muskrat activity (seen by bubbles under the ice).
Good luck don

I've also used apple with success. I have used it on a stick overhanging a foothold. You can use this to get a rat where you want him to go sometimes.

Underwater, I use pealed potatoes. Soak them in lemon juice to keep them whiter longer.

Above water, I still prefer apple. Good smell and sweet.
