does anyone have pictures or a diagram and a brief explaination of their drowning rod setups. I am interested in trying some in the coming months.

Here is a description.Smooth rod as long as necessary.L shaped lock with the hole on the short leg large enough too slide easily on the rod.Hole in long leg of the lock for attaching trap.A stop on both ends of the rod to 1) keep the lock on and 2)give you a place to anchor the rod

ric do you use a big washer or something on the ends to put a stake down through to hold the rod in a stable position or do you just shove one end into the mud?

I do not use them at all.Just gave you a description of what they are.Walking around dragging 10-15' pieces of steel rod just doesn't appeal to me

I have to concur with Ric. Very heavy, to say the least. For drowning weights it is more feasible for me to use something I do not have to pack into the set. I cannot see bringing in a drowning weight when you have them readily available at the trap site in the form of sand, gravel, dirt/mud, or rocks.

I have read where some trappers use 3/8"-1/2" re-rod. If smooth rod is used, i.e. hot or cold rolled, count on your cost going up significantly compared to re-bar.

You can make these things out of rebar just make sure your slide lock is plenty oversize. You won't have any problems with it locking up on the reverse. smile

However, I too could never see the practicality in these things. If you were trapping off the road, out of truck, they might be okay, but anything over eight feet is going to stick out of the truck. Otherwise, they are too heavy and awkward for my taste.

If there is somebody around here that actually does use them, maybe they could offer a positive comment.
