Interesting thought Tom, I mainly use snares so I cover hole and do not want a beav up on the ice. Wisconsin state law has no trap check time for under ice sets, I check every 5 days or so. Right now the ice is around 30" thick and in 5 days or so it will be back to 30" again. To much time chopping ice for me. I will give it a try though with 330's but maybe in the spring when not freezing so hard. Great thought and concept.Oh one other thing BECAREFUL not to chop up your wire or cable holding your trap when checking set.

Leo, I have actually had beaver pop up in the hole I had just chopped, this has happened a few times.Needless to say, those traps held beaver on my next check.

WOW, cool I have always wondered about that, if a beaver would pop up on the ice after hole chisled out or just cut in with saw for the first time.
Good deal

Thank you for the great explanation Tom. I am going to try that. Would 11 guage wire be strong enough to use without doubling up?

I know of one Alaskan trapper who ties a insulated wire to the jaws and (loosely) together in such a way that it's separated when the trap fires, then checks under-ice conibears with a continuity tester. Search Family Trapper on Trapperman for more information.

I've trapped beaver down to 50 below or so, and a hunk of cardboard (or pile of spruce branches) and some snow over the hole will keep the ice at 6 inches or less for a week in pretty much any conditions. In the spring, I too prefer uncovered holes.

WI must be a cold place to make 30" of ice in a week.
