Do you use them as a live capture device?

54, thats impressive. Can the cage handle large beaver and still be functional after? I like the trigger design.

As far as the trigger goes just zoom in on the trap and you should be able to see it. No if you don't keep the trap under water they will tear the trap up. It works great in 14" of water. I have caught 60# beaver and a rat or two. I have taken otter also. Every once and awhile you will catch a couple large mediums together. So far it has handled all sizes so far.

So you are not using the cage as alive trapping device, but are drowning the beaver?
Is that correct?
Thanks,

Matt I have tried every angle to get you a pic of the trigger, but just doesn't show up any better. It is very simple to make the trigger I just bend a quarter inch rod in a flat U shape thats what holds the E shape rod up the end legs of the E holds the doors up the center leg holds the U shape trigger the beaver swims into the trigger and you have your self a beaver.

The "40 pounder" don't look dead to me. JMO, but I think you would be very lucky to get or keep a 60 lb beaver in that cage, with the doors down on each end...I just don't see it happening. Beavers can swim great distances underwater, and they are not easily drowned. But, if you guys can catch more than 10 beavers per trap during trapping season, you are better than me. Unless you are counting the whole year as trapping season, (ADC beavers can be trapped all year here).

Just posting as a help to BearTrap. After seeing his post on this, I made one. I had a buddy needing one, so I thought I'd try & see how it went.

The silver pieces in the center are nuts I welded-on to the center "rib" of the trap. They allow the trigger to pivot either direction.

The trigger is the "U" shaped piece which passes through those nuts.

At the very top left, you'll see a trap-dog I welded to the 1/4" rod which runs the majority of the cage & holds the doors open. This rod has 90* bends on each end to catch the edge of the door when locked into the open position.

The "U" shaped trigger is nothing more than a prop-rod under the dog. WHen the trigger is hit, it is knocked-out from under the dog (or whatever you want to use) and allows the doors to fall.

Hope you didn't mind BearTrap, and if I did something differently than you, please feel free to clarify.

Smitty

Smitty excellent job on trigger design. I just use hog rings to attach the U. I just would like to add that the 1x1 wire holds up much better than 1x2.I have trapped a lot of beaver in these traps with very little repair work if kept under water. Take a round file and file the top of the U for the dog to sit in it will stay set better.
